But because so few of the men I know actually wear them, the quilt remained officially "unTIEtled". This package includes paper foundations and instructions to complete a quilt 40 inches square.

New York Beauty by Karen Stone.

Contains paper foundations and freezer paper templates to complete 30 blocks in their settings and instructions for designing an origional border.

About the Blocks:

There are 30 New York Beauty blocks in the quilt, arranged in opposing diagonal rows. Each block is "tilted" by the placement of 4-pointed stars, which alternate light and dark. The New York Beauty blocks each measure 81/4" finished, and when the points of the Stars are added, tilting the interior block, the finished size is 10". There are 9 different "primary arcs" (referred to on the paper foundations simply as "arc foundations"). The primary arcs are the largest foundation in each block, and all fit together with the same block background template. The inner arcs and centers vary greatly, almost always to add piecing to accommodate a greater number of fabrics. Holding one of the primary arcs "like a rainbow", you'll notice that the "spires" resemble Lady liberty's crown, and the "background" areas are shaped a bit like snow cones. The foundations for each block are arranged in the order which they appear in the diagram -- left to right, top row to bottom. Block lA is in the upper left corner, but may not be the block with which you wish to begin.

About the Border

I wish like everything that the border foundations were in this book. With the blocks, there were just too many pages to fit into this type of binding, which allows you to remove the 11" x 17" sheets of freezer paper intact from the center. While they are published separately as a supplement to this book, don't be afraid to consider drafting your own border! I've outlined the exact steps I took, and you might come up with something original that you'll be very happy with.

About the Quilt

I had a wonderful time making this quilt. I loved combining and recombining the colors, and interchanging the components of the blocks. Whether you make the quilt as pictured, or use these block patterns as a starting place for a completely different setting, I hope you enjoy this project as much as I did.
